StormTeam 3: Hurricane Melissa Update, Cloudy & chilly Tuesday locally

SAVANNAH, Ga (WSAV) – Good morning – Stormteam 3 Meteorologist Alysa Carsley – let’s have a fabulous Tuesday!

Category 5 Hurricane Melissa

TROPICS: Catastrophic category 5 Hurricane Melissa is nearing landfall this morning along the western coast of Jamaica. Max winds of 175 mph and wind gusts up to 215 mph. It is expected to maintain its devastating strength as it crosses the island through this evening. The island is expected to receive 15-30″ of rain fall, leading to flash flooding, 9-15′ storm surge, and extreme winds. NHC: Within the eyewall, total structural failure is likely.

After hitting Jamaica, it will cross Cuba as a weakening but still powerful hurricane. Our Wednesday cold front will help steer Melissa away from the east coast.

Local Forecast

Another cloudy and chilly day is on tap today! Our high temperatures will be closer to our average winter temps compared to mid-fall high temps with most areas in the upper 50s to lower 60s. A breezy wind continues with gusts up to 20 mph.

While peeks of sun will be possible tomorrow, it won’t be much as another cold front swings through late Wednesday night. High temperatures tomorrow will be a few degrees warmer in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Isolated showers will be possible along the frontal passage into early Thursday morning. This cold front will allow for high pressure to move in just in time for Halloween on Friday.

Clouds will gradually decrease on Thursday behind the front with a partly cloudy sky overall. By Friday, spooky sunshine is back with highs only in the low to mid 60s. It will be our chilliest Halloween since 2012. The last few years have been in the 70s to lower 80s. Trick-or-Treat temperatures will fall into the mid 50s after sunset…
