As SNAP benefits expire, grassroots groups in Maryland brace to cover food gaps

BETHESDA, Md. (7News) — As federal food assistance programs hang in the balance, community organizations across Maryland are bracing for what they say could be one of the most challenging months in recent memory.

For Bethesda-based So What Else, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to feeding families across the region, the demand is already pushing its limits.

“We were at capacity serving roughly 450,000 pounds of food a week, close to 40,000 families,” said co-founder Dave Silbert. “The people we talk to are frustrated. They want to get back to work, but they’re really scared. I think they feel like, I’m in line at a food bank now, but next week, is it going to be my rent? Is it going to be my car? It feels like the dominoes are falling on them.”…
