Berkeley County deputies warn of convincing phone scam

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley County deputies are warning residents about a phone scam that has already cost some victims thousands of dollars.

Investigators say the callers are posing as members of the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, using real names of deputies and command staff to sound legitimate. The phone numbers often appear local, sometimes even showing up as the sheriff’s office on caller ID.

“There are a couple of different variations of the way this scam goes, but they typically start the same,” said Cpl. Carli Carr with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office. “You’ll get a phone call from a number that may look like a Berkeley County number. They’re utilizing the names of our supervisors and telling people they missed jury duty or that they have a warrant and need to pay it off so they don’t go to jail.”…
