Local food pantries brace for surge as SNAP benefits face shutdown

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – More than half a million South Carolinians received SNAP benefits in September and local food pantries are preparing for a potential crisis if those federal funds disappear due to a government shutdown.

United Ministries, an emergency food pantry in Greenville, says it’s already struggling to meet current demand. The organization expects an even greater wave of need if SNAP benefits are cut off, leaving families without their primary safety net.

“So many of the folks that we serve are barely getting by and are working really hard to make steps towards permanent stability,” said Susan Midgett, vice president of mission advancement at United Ministries. “Just knowing that this will be another barrier for them to have their basic needs met, that’s why we’re so committed to making sure that our pantry can continue and meet the need of the community.”…
