Nonprofits, utilities move to help furloughed workers

Furloughed workers in the Huntsville area can find some relief from Huntsville Utilities, which has suspended late fees and service disconnections for nonpayment during the federal government shutdown, while the nonprofits like One Generation Away and the Food Bank of North Alabama are providing food assistance.

Huntsville Utilities customers won’t face late fees or service disconnections for nonpayment during the federal government shutdown, an extension of the temporary suspension that was initiated during the utilities’ enterprise software transition.

“Many of our customers are directly or indirectly affected by this government shutdown, and we want to give them one less thing to worry about during this uncertain time,” Wes Kelley, the president and CEO of Huntsville Utilities, said in a release. “Our priority is to support this community and ensure uninterrupted service while people focus on their families and essential needs.”…
