MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The family-owned local candy shop Wee-R-Sweetz said they are still feeling the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic as prices for sugar, corn syrup, fuel, labor costs, and more are on the rise.
Over the last few years, co-owner Todd Conip said their candies’ main ingredient, sugar, has seen a steady increase. A price in turn that has made them have to increase almost all of their sweet treats, including their holiday goodies, like their mummy decorated caramel apples.
“We were paying for sugar pre-pandemic around 55, 60 cents a pound. Now it’s up to about 80, 85 cents a pound, just to give you an idea. And that’s a big jump,” he said. “Even if your income has gone up 10%, it’s not enough to cover the cost of everything else going up.”…
