Lubbock rallies to aid students during SNAP and WIC uncertainty

LUBBOCK, Texas–With uncertainty surrounding what might happen to SNAP and WIC benefits if the government doesn’t reopen by the end of the week, local businesses are stepping up to help fill the gap.

Dozens of community members gathered at The Falls Tennis and Athletic Club for a tennis mixer to raise money for the Lubbock-Cooper Pirate and Patriot Pantry. This program operates in every school across the district, providing students in need with food for the weekends, as well as clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies to any student who might need it.

Food resources available across the South Plains during SNAP pause

Laura Bush Middle School Assistant Principal Randa Wren says the need is always increasing.

“Even those students who are on that list that we provide those meals every Friday, we still have daily students who may still need a coat or long sleeve shirt as the temperatures continue to get colder.”…
