LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Families are increasingly turning to Catholic Charities for food assistance as the government shutdown continues to strain household budgets.
Many clients fall into the “ALICE” category — Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — meaning they have jobs but still can’t afford basic necessities.
Executive Director Cynthia Quintanilla said the organization served 800 people this month and she expects that number to exceed more than 800 in November. The food pantry has struggled to keep up with demand, with some freezers recently sitting empty.
