Sixteen Long Beach Residents Move from River Encampments to Interim Housing Through County Program

In mid-October 2025, sixteen people who had been living unsheltered along the Los Angeles River in Long Beach moved into interim housing. This was part of Los Angeles County’s Pathway Home initiative. Most of the group moved on October 15 and 16. Two more secured motel rooms the following week. The effort involved the Los Angeles County Pathway Home team, the City of Long Beach, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), the nonprofit PATH, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

The program focused on people living near the river, including under the Anaheim Street, Shoemaker, and Ocean Boulevard bridges. Some residents had stayed in RVs, while others camped under bridges. Outreach coordinator Shaonnie Corella said many had been preparing for the move by reducing their belongings.

One participant, Melissa, 41, moved with her partner Carlos, 46, and their two dogs. Melissa said she was still mourning the loss of a third dog but was looking forward to more stable housing. She hopes to return to school and pursue interests in cosmetology and auto mechanics. Carlos has worked in several jobs but lost his housing and car over time.
