AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — The City of Amarillo is making a final push to collect socks for the homeless as part of its inaugural “Socktober” drive.
The initiative, led by the city’s Coming Home Program and the United Way Youth Leadership Council, aims to gather over 1,500 new pairs of socks for men and women, which will be included in care kits for those in need.
“Socks are the number one request from the homeless,” said Justin Ward, coordinator for the Coming Home Program. “Often people who are on the street have to walk everywhere that they go and that means that they’re wearing through socks pretty quick or they’re not able to wash them pretty regularly and foot hygiene can lead to a lot of problems down the road and so if we’re able to provide some nice new clean socks it’ll go a long way to just improving their overall quality of life.”…
