The 1904 St. Louis Fair’s Accidental American Legacies
The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair left two odd gifts that changed America.
First, the Smithsonian built a giant bird cage – 228 feet long and 50 feet high – that held 1,000 birds. When the fair ended, locals refused to let it go.
The city bought it for just $3,500, and 12,000 people showed up on opening day…
