‘No idea what to do next’: uncertainty remains over Halong evacuees returning home

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Nearly three weeks after former Typhoon Halong displaced hundreds of Alaska Native residents from dozens of Western Alaska communities, Chris Ondola and his wife Kathleen Simon still don’t know how they’ll get home to Tuntutuliak.

“I had no idea what we were supposed to do next,” Ondola said.

The storm impacted 52 Western Alaska communities, forcing mass evacuations. Anchorage initially prepared to house up to 1,600 evacuees. As of Wednesday, Alaska’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management says 98 people remain in shelters — 32 at the Alaska Airlines Center and 66 at the Egan Center — while others stay with family and friends throughout the state…
