The Dena’ina’s Lost Hunting Grounds at Chugach
The K’enaht’ana Dena’ina people lived on Chugach lands for over 1,000 years. They knew every hill and stream, hunted moose and sheep, and caught salmon that kept them fed.
Russian traders came in the late 1700s, bringing new ways to Eklutna village. Then life changed fast. The railroad cut through in 1915. World War II brought troops.
Anchorage grew. By 1970, their hunting grounds became Chugach State Park, and they lost rights to hunt on their own land…
