Mount Pleasant man loses nearly $99K in elaborate phone scam: Report

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — A Mount Pleasant man told police he lost nearly $99,000 in what appears to be a sophisticated banking scam involving a caller claiming to work for Wells Fargo, according to a police report.

On Oct. 20, officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded to Town Hall after the man walked in to report the fraud. At the scene, the victim told police he received a phone call on Oct. 17 from someone identifying himself as “David” with Wells Fargo Bank.

The caller claimed a $1,000 charge had been made to the man’s account and offered to help resolve the issue…
