Charleston Police Department announces passing of longtime detective

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – The Charleston Police Department announced on Thursday that Detective Melvin Magwood, a longtime member who served the city for 26 years, has passed away.

Detective Magwood first started with CPD patrolling the streets of downtown Charleston in 1994. While on patrol duty, he trained incoming Charleston officers and received numerous letters of appreciation from residents he had served.

Just four years later, Magwood joined the Central Detective Bureau and received a commendation for his efforts to arrest an armed robbery suspect in 2011. As part of the Special Victims Unit, Magwood and his squad were nominated as team of the year for their work in 2012…
