COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — One of the country’s largest grocery chains is offering central Ohioans an opportunity to double the spending power of their pennies before the currency is officially phased out.
Giant Eagle announced that during a one-day event, customers can cash in their pennies and receive a Giant Eagle gift card equal to twice the value of the coins. In a news release, the store stated that on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., shoppers can convert their spare pennies into plastic.

The company said that the promotion will take place at all 200-plus Giant Eagle and Market District locations. The move is designed to help the stores build their penny reserves so they can keep providing exact change for transactions made with paper money and coins.
