RAEFORD, N.C. (WNCN) — As a cross-county investigation is underway to figure out what led to the death of a husband and wife at the hands of their teenage foster son, who later committed suicide, new information from deputies sheds more light on the violent incident.
The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office told CBS 17 that Joann Nicole Chavis and Ted Matthew Chavis were stabbed multiple times by the 17-year-old male teenager on Monday evening around 6 p.m. on Cope Road in Raeford. Initially, the call came in as a reported cardiac arrest, but was later ruled a double homicide.
After a search that led them to Lake Waccamaw, deputies in coordination with the Columbus County Sheriff Office and the Lake Waccamaw Police Department found teenager’s vehicle unoccupied near the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina, 50 miles from the scene of the crime.
“When approached by officers, (the teen) committed suicide from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” deputies said. “The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in Columbus County in regards to the suicide.”…
