SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The City of Syracuse will begin issuing fines to drivers caught violating red lights and school speed zones on Nov. 2.
It’s part of the School Zone Traffic Enforcement program. Posted below are the details of what constitutes a fine, provided by the City of Syracuse:
- Per New York State Law, speed cameras in school zones operate during posted school hours (7:00 AM to 6:00 PM) on days when school is in session.
- Per New York State Law, redlight cameras operate in and around school zones 24/7, regardless of the time of day or whether school is in session.
- Both Red light and Speed camera fines are $50 per violation, with the possibility of an additional $25 for non-payment.
- Fines include a photo, location and timestamp of the violation, along with instructions for payment or contesting the ticket.
The issuance of fines begins after the city has held a 60 warning period for drivers. During that time, drivers caught violating red lights and school speed zones were given only a warning.
At one point in the warning period, drivers accrued 60,000 warning tickets in just two weeks. Broken down, 59,950 of the tickets were issued to drivers who were speeding. 430 were given to drivers going through red lights…
