The Napa Valley Transportation Authority (NVTA) has received a $139,900 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. The grant will support a study of driver behavior in Napa County. This project is part of the Napa Valley Vision Zero Plan, which was adopted in October 2023. The plan aims to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The funding will be used for data collection and analysis in all six local jurisdictions in the county.
According to the Vision Zero plan, unsafe speed is a factor in 32% of crashes that cause death or serious injury. Traditional crash data does not always show risky behaviors, such as speeding or erratic driving, that happen before a crash or are not reported. The new study will collect more detailed information about these behaviors.
The project will also focus on incidents involving bicyclists and pedestrians. These groups make up 19% of serious or fatal crashes in Napa County. NVTA staff will work with local law enforcement and public works departments. They will use the findings to develop solutions to reduce unsafe driving and improve safety for all road users…
