Marco will pay less for audit after negotiating with firm that found material weakness

Marco Island will pay less than billed for its fiscal year 2024 audit after negotiating publicly with the firm that spent extra time digging through error-riddled documents.

The invoice, from Fort Myers and Naples audit firm CLA (CliftonLarsonAllen LLP) came in $100,000 more than the contract because of the extra work needed, CLA Principal Chris Kessler told Marco Island City Council. This was CLA’s first year of a three-year contract with the city.

At their Oct. 20 meeting, city councilors asked about timing in informing city staff or the council about the severity of the overage amount. All agreed, the relationship would be different going forward. This audit was the first of a three-year contract between Marco Island and CLA…
