Locals look for ways to help as SNAP lapse looms

As Arkansans prepare for an interruption in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits resulting from the government shutdown this weekend, locals in Fayetteville are scrambling to fill at least some of the need that will be created by the lapse in federal assistance.

According to the USDA website this week, SNAP benefits will not be issued on schedule on Nov. 1 due in part to the government shutdown that has been in effect since Oct. 1.

Some states are working to help with the lapse in federal funds. Louisiana on Wednesday joined a list of 17 states that have approved measures to assist those facing food insecurity while federal programs are suspended. That is not the case, at least so far, in Arkansas…
