Half of Chicago City Council is ‘gravely concerned’ about head tax proposal

A majority of Chicago City Council members sent a letter to Mayor Brandon Johnson detailing their three biggest concerns with his 2026 budget proposal.

In a letter Wednesday signed by 27 alderpeople, they wrote that they are “gravely concerned” about reinstating the corporate head tax, which would charge large companies $21 per employee per hour. They argued the tax would discourage hiring and push employers outside the city.
