City collects food, opens parks to urban farming to help those without SNAP

The City of Albuquerque is opening public spaces to urban farming and markets and organizing food drives to aid those expected to be without the federal food benefit program, known as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), as the federal government shutdown is expected to drag into its second month this weekend.

Mayor Keller announced the city will be accepting non-perishable food items at all four of the Health and Social Services Centers. Financial donations will also be accepted through the One Albuquerque Fund. These donations will go directly toward supporting households impacted by the loss of SNAP benefits…
