When folks think about Halloween, many usually picture cool air, crunchy leave, and maybe some fog in low lying areas. But what about tornadoes? Many may be surprised to know that a tornado in Arkansas on Halloween is actually rare. Believe it or not, since records began in the late 1800s, only two tornadoes have ever been recorded in the state on Halloween (October 31st).
The first tornado recorded on Halloween was in 1974 in Columbia County, when an E-F1 tornado briefly touched down around 1:18 p.m. It stayed on the ground for just over a mile and caused no injuries or deaths.
About forty years later, another tornado struck on October 31, 2013, but this time in Craighead County near Caraway. This one was also rated an EF1, which damaged homes, churches, and businesses and uprooted dozens of trees before lifting near the northeastern edge of town…
