County Attorney: No Charges Filed in June Coralville Shooting After Self-Defense Determination

On October 31, 2025, the Johnson County Attorney’s Office announced that no charges will be filed in a fatal shooting in Coralville, Iowa. The incident occurred on June 11, 2025, and resulted in the death of Mason Edwards, 27, of Coralville. County Attorney Rachel Zimmermann Smith said there was not enough evidence to disprove that the use of deadly force was justified under Iowa law, specifically Iowa Code 704.2A.

The shooting happened late at night. Michelle Jenkins-Robertson, 28, called 911 from her home on 2nd Street. She reported that she shot Edwards after he forced his way into her home and assaulted her. Police found Edwards in the bedroom doorway with two gunshot wounds to his torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Jenkins-Robertson had visible injuries that matched her account of being attacked.

Investigators found that Edwards and Jenkins-Robertson had an on-and-off relationship but did not live together. Edwards called Jenkins-Robertson before arriving at her home.
