Denver woman turns trick-or-treating into food drive as SNAP benefits freeze looms

DENVER — Instead of just candy this Halloween, a Denver family will be handing out shelf-stable food items, and the idea may have sparked a movement.

KC Neufeld lives in Denver’s Ruby Hill neighborhood, where thousands are preparing for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to end on Nov. 1. Two federal judges ruled on Friday that the administration must continue to fund SNAP during the government shutdown, but the resumption may be delayed because the process of loading cards can take a week or more.

“I thought, well, since people will already be here at my house grabbing candy, I might as well hand out some shelf stable food too,” Neufeld said…
