At long last, Portage Central Mustangs claim first state championship in program history

GRAND LEDGE, Mich. — The wait for the Mustangs is finally over. Fitting, given that it took as much time as possible for the team to get there.

Portage Central claimed the first boys soccer state championship in program history Saturday night, defeating Ann Arbor Huron in the MHSAA Division 1 title game 1-0 in penalty kicks. Jayce Handley put home the game-winning kick in the fourth frame to help the Mustangs capture the title on kicks, 4 goals to 2.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw Portage Central holding a 5-4 shot advantage over Ann Arbor Huron, the River Rats came out firing in the second half, outshooting the Mustangs 12-3.
