Federal shutdown delays SNAP benefits; CAPK, National Guard respond with food aid

The ongoing federal shutdown is causing delays in SNAP benefits, impacting thousands of families in Kern County. In response, Community Action Partnership of Kern (CAPK) and the National Guard have initiated food distributions at the Kern County Fairgrounds.

The first day of distribution saw a long line of cars stretching over a mile along P Street, as hundreds of families awaited assistance.

Nathan Smith, a CAPK volunteer, described the morning as a “hard start-up” but praised the efforts of the National Guard and volunteers, saying, “They’ve been doing a great job with getting food to the people in need.”…
