Cities, charities across central Alabama provide assistance as SNAP benefits pause during government shutdown

PELHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — As the federal government shutdown continues, families across Alabama who rely on SNAP benefits are feeling the impact. Now, cities and local organizations are stepping up to help fill the gap.

At Grace Klein Community in Pelham, volunteers have been distributing food to families affected by the pause in benefits. The organization said the need has grown rapidly in recent days.

“On a typical day, we were serving about 300 people for the entire week,” said Ann Hollis Jobe, International and National Serve Team Coordinator for Grace Klein. “Last week, we saw a huge increase. We’re in need of more volunteers, donations, and financial contributions. Any way people can help is a huge blessing.”…
