Emergency demolition of downtown Charleston building causes road closure

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A portion of King Street has been closed by the City of Charleston for an emergency demolition of an unsafe building.

King Street between Grove Street and Francis Street is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic until further notice, Charleston city spokesperson Deja Knight McMillan said.

The vacant building located at 1001 King Street suffered the collapse of its roof and a wall on Friday. The front wall of the building is unstable and could potentially collapse into the street, prompting the road closure to protect the public’s safety.
