‘Until this crisis is over’ Second Harvest Food Bank meets surging demand in East Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Over 41 million people rely on SNAP to meet their nutritional needs, but with the ongoing government shutdown, people in East Tennessee are turning to Second Harvest Food Bank to feed their families.

“We’ve been bombarded with people who are scared and don’t want to be hungry in the middle of November. So we are doing everything we can to let them know our partners are taking care of them,” said Second Harvest CEO Elaine Streno. “We’ve got food going out as fast as possible, and we’ll do that until this crisis is over.”

She said the organization needs volunteers to keep food flowing to those in need.

“We need to buy as much food as possible to get it to the people who need it,” Streno said. “Our website is secondharvestetn.org. It’s the best way to find out about where our local partners are, where our mobile pantries are going, and to give.”…
