Federal shutdown halts LIHEAP funds, leaving Pennsylvanians struggling to stay warm

DILLSBURG, Pa. — As the federal government shutdown leaves SNAP funding in limbo, even more federal dollars for key programs will not be coming in November, including money to help families heat their homes.

Eric Saunders, Executive Director of New Hope Ministries in York County, says his organization helps distribute heating oil and wood pellets, and assists people in applying for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds to get through the winter.

However, the shutdown has completely paused more than $200 million in LIHEAP funding for Pennsylvania through at least November, leaving residents who rely on that support left in the cold…
