New Jersey’s Newark School of the Arts to Close after 57 Years

The Newark School of the Arts, in New Jersey, has made a sudden announcement that it will close. A banner on the website reports that the school is closed “until further notice” and that more information will be forthcoming by email.

Founded in 1968, the school’s mission was to provide training in the performing and visual arts to students of all ages and from all financial backgrounds. More than 50,000 people have passed through the school since its founding, and at present, it serves 750 students each week.

The school was funded by sources including the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Department of State, and the National Endowment for the Arts. In 2016, 2017, and 2020, it received a Citation of Excellence from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts, and it has also been designated a Major Presenting and Service Organization…
