Camille Singleton sentenced to life without parole for 2021 murder of Inita Gaither

SMITHFIELD — A Johnston County jury on Thursday found Camille Nechelle Singleton guilty of first-degree murder after four days of testimony and evidence.

The victim, Inita Gaither, was a beloved member of the Clayton community and was supported in court by a large group of family and friends during the trial. Senior Resident Superior Court Judge Thomas H. Lock presided over the case and sentenced Singleton to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The case began in 2021 as a welfare check after school officials and Gaither’s family became concerned when she failed to pick up her great-grandson from school.
