ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Roanoke County Public Schools is entering a new era next school year. Current superintendent, Dr. Ken Nicely, retires after 33 years with the district. They’ve named the current deputy superintendent, Dr. James (Jamie) Soltis, as Dr. Nicely’s successor.
Dr. Soltis has spent years with the county, starting as a science teacher in 1999. He quickly moved up the ranks, becoming principal at Glenvar Middle and High Schools. However, his roots in the district go back further than his job, as he also graduated from Roanoke County schools.
“Actually, that’s really special, and it’s super exciting,” Dr. Soltis said. “I do feel the weight of being responsible for over 13,000 kids, and making sure that every day, I’m doing my very best to make sure that every child is given the opportunity to be successful. So it’s exciting. It’ll be very rewarding, and I’m blessed to be surrounded by an amazing team.”…
