TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Lucas County Sheriff’s Office is warning about scammers targeting relatives and friends of people in jail after a local woman was scammed out of more than $2,200.
The sheriff’s office received another report of scammers using public records to target a parent whose son needed bail money. Investigators say the victim sent the scammers $2,250.72 through the application Zelle.
“We don’t utilize that application. No court in the area utilizes that application. What ended up happening was that a scammer called her. They’ve been watching our public records. They saw that the relative was in jail, so they called her and said if she paid a certain amount of money that the Lucas County Sheriff’s Office will release her loved one.
