Akeley’s Revolutionary Muskrat Diorama at Milwaukee Museum

Carl Akeley changed how we see animals in museums forever. In 1886, he joined the Milwaukee Public Museum after working with P. T. Barnum’s famous elephant.

Back then, museums just lined up dead animals in rows. Akeley had a better idea.

He built wooden frames, covered them with wire mesh and plaster, then shaped them into lifelike forms…
