HISD expands free breakfast, supper programs as families grapple with SNAP uncertainty

HISD is expanding its free breakfast and after-school meal programs as many Texas families try to stretch uncertain food benefits or have already missed aid for November because of the federal shutdown.

Texans will receive partial November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, after the Trump administration said it would release some funds after two judges ruled the country’s largest food aid program must keep running during the shutdown.

Beginning Wednesday, HISD will also expand its after-school supper program to 99 additional campuses. It already serves free supper at 132 of its 274 schools. Both breakfast and supper programs are free and designed to help more children “start and end their school day with a nutritious meal,” HISD said in a statement…
