D.C. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie considers party switch as he eyes run for mayor

At-Large Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie is considering a plan to allow him to keep his job should he mount a bid for mayor, the clearest sign yet he may make a bid for higher office next year.

According to several sources familiar with the deliberations, McDuffie could effectively swap party affiliations with fellow At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds: she’s a Democrat and he’s an independent.

This maneuvering is due to D.C.’s unusual rules requiring that no more than two of the Council’s four at-large members be nominated by the same political party. Should McDuffie run for mayor in next year’s Democratic primary, most legal observers believe he’d need to resign his seat so as not to run afoul of that requirement…
