Former Albuquerque hotel turned into transitional housing for homeless families

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. – An old hotel near the former site of the city’s notorious Coronado Park is now the focus of a new transitional housing project in the county’s push to get a thousand people off the streets over the next year.

The former Comfort Inn is one of two properties Bernalillo County bought in the last month. The county says the former hotel will take in homeless families with kids 18 and under.

“What was great about this property is it has suites, which are much larger, and we’ll be able to fit a larger family during the 90-day period that we’re working on transitioning them into permanent housing. So with this also having suites, as well as some smaller rooms and kind of one bedroom, kind of two bedroom situation, we’re able to fit a wider range of individuals and families,” explained Bernalillo County Real Estate Manager Ben McIntosh.

The county spent about $6 million in state funding to buy the hotel, which has been renovated in recent years. There are around 82 rooms, which can house up to 240 people at a time.
