Upstate food pantry sees unprecedented demand following government SNAP cuts

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – United Ministries in Greenville is seeing more families asking for help with no slowdown in sight, as the first week without Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits puts extra pressure on food pantries across the Upstate.

The food pantry typically sees its highest need at the end of the month when SNAP benefits start to run low. This time, that surge is happening just days after the cuts took effect.

Staff at the nonprofit said Mondays are usually slow with about eight to 15 families coming in for help. On Monday, that number jumped to 40, including more than half who have never asked for assistance there before…
