Forty cats have been rescued by San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement after being found in a single San Diego studio apartment. Their elderly owner, who had been hospitalized, was no longer able to care for them.
A community member reported multiple cats and a strong odor coming from the unit in the 1400 block of Imperial Avenue. San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement worked with building management and the tenant’s family to gain entry and ensure the cats could be safely surrendered.
Due to the conditions and stress of the animals hiding, the cats were methodically rescued over the course of several weeks:
- Sept. 17, 2025: 15 cats
- Sept. 24, 2025: 11 cats
- Oct. 1, 2025: 14 cats
Upon intake, each animal received vaccines and medical exams. Several are being treated for upper respiratory infections. To date, 16 healthy cats have been adopted and eight are currently available for adoption. All pets available for adoption can be found at sdhumane.org/adopt…
