Melissa Baker, an employee at Akron Children’s Hospital and mother of 11-year-old Korbin, has experience both as a parent and a professional in autism care. The new Tom and Jill Zidian Family Autism Center opened at 130 W. Exchange St. on the hospital’s Akron campus. The 11,020-square-foot center is designed to be accessible, inclusive, and sensory-friendly. It aims to support families dealing with autism diagnoses and care.
Melissa’s son, Korbin, showed developmental differences at a young age. With her background as a child life specialist, Melissa accessed early interventions such as occupational and feeding therapy. Korbin was diagnosed with autism at age 4½. Melissa’s experience helped her advocate for his needs and assist other families in similar situations.
