Mom competent for trial in arson death of daughter, 12

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A woman charged with felony murder for an arson fire that killed her 12-year-old daughter has been found competent to stand trial, setting the stage for upcoming court hearings that could put her in prison for life.

The finding of competency for Roconda J. Singleton was presented during a hearing Tuesday in Grand Rapids District Court.

Singleton faces five felony charges stemming from a Jan. 25 fire at her Grand Rapids home that resulted in the death of her daughter, Shamiya Stewart.

During a hearing in August, Singleton was found to be incompetent to stand trial, but a report indicated that she was restorable.

With the finding of competency, a preliminary examination has been set for Dec. 1 to determine if there is enough evidence to move the case forward…
