LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A deadly fire on the north side of Lansing early Monday morning happened in a home that the city had deemed unsafe since March 2025.
The home, in the 1500 block of North High Street, had been red-tagged since March 2025, property records and city officials confirmed.
“The property was red tagged in March 2025 and went into NEAT status after 90 days,” city spokesman Scott Bean wrote in an email to 6 News. “Code saw no evidence from the outside that the home was occupied.”
A 62-year-old woman perished in the fire. A 31-year-old woman was taken to University of Michigan Health–Sparrow with smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire has been attributed by Lansing Fire Department officials to “careless smoking.”…
