Marion County to allocate funds to food banks as SNAP benefits in flux

Marion County is planning to send thousands of dollars to local food banks amid the government shutdown and Nov. 1 freeze to monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits.

On Thursday, Oct. 30, the county board of commissioners met to discuss sending $200,000 of economic development dollars to fund food baskets in partnership with local Marion County food shares.

The county said these dollars could supplement up to 4,500 food boxes per week if the government shutdown continues, if purchased in bulk at food-share rates. The food would go to county residents who qualify for SNAP benefits…
