Bryant Neighborhood to Receive $11 Million for New Geothermal Heating and Cooling System

On October 7, 2025, the Ann Arbor City Council approved the acceptance of nearly $11 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for a geothermal heating and cooling system in the Bryant neighborhood. The grant, totaling $10,788,167, is the second phase of DOE support. The first phase focused on community engagement and system design.

The new funding will allow the City, through its Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU), to build and operate a geothermal system. The system will serve 262 homes, the local elementary school, and the community center in Bryant. Ann Arbor will also provide about $11.1 million for the project. The goal is to offer affordable and sustainable heating and cooling for the area.

Dr. Missy Stults, Director of the Office of Sustainability and Innovations, said the DOE’s support will help make clean energy available to Bryant residents.
