Protesters gather outside hearing for preliminary injunction over federal agents’ use of force

A federal judge is hearing arguments over whether she should issue a preliminary injunction over federal agents’ use of force and tear gas against protesters, civilians, journalists and clergy during Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago.

Protesters gathered outside the Dirksen federal courthouse Wednesday morning as the hearing got underway. While U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino had to answer to Judge Sara Ellis in person last week, he is not in court today. Attorneys will use Bovino’s recorded deposition as testimony in the case, and he won’t be taking the stand.

Several people provided testimony about what they call aggressive and fear-inducing enforcement tactics, including incidents where agents busted a car window, rounded up residents, and a deadly confrontation in Franklin Park…
