Demand at Perry Food Pantry surges as SNAP benefits fail

People patiently waited in line outside the Perry Food Pantry Tuesday morning, queuing up well before the pantry’s 10 a.m. opening.

“It’s been very steady all day,” said Food Pantry Volunteer Coordinator Lois Hoger at about noon. “Thursday will be even busier. It’s always our biggest day.”

The uptick in users follows the ongoing deadlock in Congress, which caused a suspension in payments to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the source of food help to 42 million people in the U.S., including 750,000 Iowans, among whom are 4,000 residents of Dallas County…
