Families of 3 UA students slain in suspected hit-and-run in Tucson share heartbreak and shock

Family members of the three University of Arizona students who were killed Oct. 30 in a suspected hit-and-run shared their heartbreak and shock during the initial appearance of the young man suspected of fatally striking them with his Porsche Boxster while impaired.

Tucson police identified the victims as Katya Rosaura Castillo Mendoza, 21, Sophia Akimi Troetel, 21, and Josiah Patrick Santos, 22. UA confirmed all three were students. Troetel was a double major in psychology and Spanish. Santos studied Japanese and theatre arts while Mendoza studied finance and real-estate development.

The three were walking in a marked crosswalk when they were struck by Louis John Artal, 19, who was driving a Porsche Boxster near Euclid Avenue and Second Street — about two blocks from the UA campus — according to Tucson police…
